The original 18 holes the Red and Yellow opened in 1994. The 3rd 9 holes, the Blue course, opened in 1999 and the 4th 9 holes, the Orange course in 2007.

The most recent addition is the superb 9 hole Par 3 Course designed by James Edwards, with another 9 hole Par 3 already in the pipeline.

The natural contours of the landscape have shaped the design of the course, which covers 400 acres. The beauty and interest of the course is further enhanced by nine lakes, thirty-four acres of woodland and free flowing streams.

Red Course Individual Hole Analysis

The Red Course at Cumberwell Park is an undulating parkland with flowing streams and rolling countryside

Hole 1 Par 4

Cumberwell Red Course Hole 1

Stroke Index: Ladies 5, Men 9

The 1st hole is a good length par four played into the prevailing wind.

A strong drive down the left side will open up the green for your second (but beware of the out of bounds on the left).

There is plenty of room up the right but the offset green will be hard to find from that side.

Hole 2 Par 4

Cumberwell Red Course Hole 2

Stroke Index: Ladies 9, Men 5

The 2nd hole is another long par 4 usually played with a left to right wind.

A solid drive should set up a long or medium iron second.

There are no greenside bunkers, but a diagonal swale running along the right side of the green can throw poorly placed shots offline.

Get a par here and you’ve earned it.

Hole 3 Par 3

Cumberwell Red Course Hole 3

Stroke Index: Ladies 15, Men 17

The 3rd hole is the first of the excellent par threes at Cumberwell.

From the back tee it can be quite formidable playing into the wind but the forward tees offer a chance of a birdie.

Clubbing is the key as anything short can role back down the slope and into the front bunkers, or worse still, the pond that fronts the picturesque hole.

Beware the wind that comes in from the left as the tee is sheltered by a copse of trees.

Hole 4 Par 4

Cumberwell Red Course Hole 4

Stroke Index: Ladies 7, Men 11

The 4th hole can be a bit of a breather as it’s usually played down wind.

A good line, if you are brave enough, is over the sleeper faced bunker on the left with a touch of fade.

If not, you can hit it further right into the generous fairway but you may get blocked out by the old oak tree and large mound that protect the right side of the green.

Hole 5 Par 4

Cumberwell Red Course Hole 5

Stroke Index: Ladies 13, Men 13

The 5th hole is a superb shot par four with many tee shot options.

Do you have a go at the green, or lay-up shot of the three bunkers?

Or do you try and thread one down the gap in the fairway between the bunkers and the deep rough and trees that protect the left side of the hole?

Get it right and the birdie could be yours.

Get it wrong and the bunkers and sloping green could present all sorts of problems.

Hole 6 Par 4

Cumberwell Red Course Hole 6

Stroke Index: Ladies 11, Men 3

From the back tees this is a long hole, but from the regular tees it is a bit more forgiving.

There are no bunkers on the hole but the mounding on either side of the fairway can kick your ball into a lot of trouble if you get a bit wayward.

Hole 7 Par 3

Cumberwell Red Course Hole 7

Stroke Index: Ladies 17, Men 15

Like many of the short holes at Cumberwell, this one plays down to a green set in the ancient Hayswood.

Clubbing is always the issue here so check the yardage and go with the facts.

Anything long can hit the bank at the back and disappear into oblivion. It can be a nice little birdie  or a card wrecker.

Hole 8 Par 4

Cumberwell Red Course Hole 8

Stroke Index: Ladies 1, Men 1

One of the best holes you’ll ever come across.

The stream down the left side tempts people to block it right, but that leaves a very long and testing approach from the rough.

Play boldly straight down the centre and the hole becomes much more forgiving.

A small well protected green is found the other side of the stream on this delightful dogleg.

Hole 9 Par 5

Cumberwell Red Course Hole 9

Stroke Index: Ladies 3, Men 7

Just what you need at the end of a steep climb to the 9th tee.

A hole measuring 606 yards. But don’t get too distressed, the fairway is very generous and is usually played down wind.

A drive up the right side with draw can sometimes get a helpful kick from the bank allowing you to set up a fairly short third shot.

Yellow Course Individual Hole Analysis

The Yellow Course at Cumberwell Park is an ancient woodland and natural water features

Hole 10 Par 4

Cumberwell Yellow Course Hole 10

Stroke Index: Ladies 18, Men 18

A real gem of a hole.

Go for the green or take an iron for safety – those are your options, only you can decide.

The green, especially with the hole on the left, can leave some very interesting putts.

Hole 11 Par 4 (Ladies) 5 (Men)

Cumberwell Yellow Course Hole 11

Stroke Index: Ladies 2, Men 10

From the tee all you can see is the bunker in the distance, but what you don’t appreciate is how much the hole swings to the right.

The bunker is a good aiming point unless you are a long hitter. In which case, you will be wanting to cut one around the dogleg, or hit over the edge of the wood.

A cleverly sited ancient Dew Pond, known as the sheep-dip, provides real risk and reward qualities on this great shot par five.

Hole 12 Par 5

Cumberwell Yellow Course Hole 12

Stroke Index: Ladies 10, Men 16

Despite it being a long hole, the 12th is one of the most testing tee shots on the course.

Everything runs down towards the pond on the left side of the fairway, so keep the drive as close to the wood on the right as you dare.

From the fairway, the green can be within reach but once again greenside bunkers and the stream on the left can give cause for concern.

Still a good opportunity for the bold player.

Hole 13 Par 3

Cumberwell Yellow Course Hole 13

Stroke Index: Ladies 14, Men 16

A natural short hole set in the woods. Hit down the left side with a bit of fade and the ball will normally follow the contours of the land onto the green.

You can aim directly over the bunkers if the flag is cut on the right side but beware the drainage ditch just beyond the green on that side.

Hole 14 Par 4

Cumberwell Yellow Course Hole 14

Stroke Index: Ladies 4, Men 4

A beautifully picturesque hole.

The key is to get as close to the lake as you dare on the tee shot so as to open up the green for a short medium iron second.

Mind the flag cut on the back left side of the green as it is well protected by a partially hidden bunker.

Hole 15 Par 4 (Men) Par 5 (Ladies)

Cumberwell Yellow Course Hole 15

Stroke Index: Ladies 4, Men 4

Hole 16 Par 3

Cumberwell Yellow Course Hole 16

Stroke Index: Ladies 16, Men 12

A feature hole at Cumberwell.

This delightful, downhill par three is played over a lake that guards both the front and left side of the green.

Hole 17 Par 4

Cumberwell Yellow Course Hole 17

Stroke Index: Ladies 12, Men 14

Another tricky short four.

From the green tee it is one of the most daunting drives in the south west.

However, further forward it can offer a birdie opportunity.

Beware the stream that meanders down the right side of the entire hole.

Hole 18 Par 4

Cumberwell Yellow Course Hole 18

Stroke Index: Ladies 6, Men 8

Seven bunkers up the right side of this hole dictate strategy.

With the wind usually blowing in from the right, aiming at the bunkers and allowing it to drift back onto the fairway is often the best play.

If you are finishing your round here and make a par, you have done well.

Blue Course Individual Hole Analysis

The Blue Course at Cumberwell Park has wonderful water features that will provide many challenges

Hole 19 Par 5

Cumberwell Blue Course Hole 19

Stroke Index: Ladies 5, Men 5

No fewer than ten bunkers are brought into play on this 90 degree dogleg hole.

Seven of them are located right where you need to place your drive.

Longer hitters sometimes cut the corner so as to set up a long second to the superbly sited green with the lake as a backdrop.

The one thing you must do though is hit your drive far enough to get a view of the fairway.

Hole 20 Par 4

Cumberwell Blue Course Hole 20

Stroke Index: Ladies 7, Men 1

A daunting drive over the corner of the lake is the first challenge on what is one of the most testing holes at Cumberwell.

From there you will need a long and accurate second to the rolling green protected on the right by some severe bunkers.

Hole 21 Par 4

Cumberwell Blue Course Hole 21

Stroke Index: Ladies 7, Men 15

A great little par four, full of options.

You can take the ultra cautious route and just poke a little iron off the tee.

However, that will leave you a longer second over the cavernous greenside bunker with the possibility of getting blocked out by the trees.

The smart and aggressive play is to drill a long iron or three wood at the poplar trees in the distance and get as close to the pond as you dare.

This will give you an easy pitch in and a chance to grab a much needed birdie.

Hole 22 Par 4

Cumberwell Blue Course Hole 22

Stroke Index: Ladies 15, Men 13

Another top quality driving hole.

Take on the left hand side and cut the corner.

The slope of the mounds will bring it back to the fairway but don’t pull it left or you will end up in an old hedge.

A simple pitch in will seem easy, but the green slopes severely from the back to the front and also to the right.

Hole 23 Par 4

Cumberwell Blue Course Hole 23

Stroke Index: Ladies 3, Men 3

The large poplar tree in the distance is a good aiming point but you need to be long and straight to hit the sloping fairway.

Three hidden bunkers protect anything that goes right in an attempt to cut the corner too much.

Beware the wetlands area to the left of the fairway.

Hole 24 Par 3

Cumberwell Blue Course Hole 24

Stroke Index: Ladies 17, Men 17

With vast multiple tees, this hole can be anything from a wedge to a three iron.

Played over a picturesque lake with a brook to the left, this hole is very photogenic.

However, you won’t be admiring the vista if you come up short.

Hole 25 Par 4

Cumberwell Blue Course Hole 25

Stroke Index: Ladies 1, Men 7

Yet another excellent driving hole.

The temptation is to cut the corner from the tee but with three hidden bunkers and some evil clumps of gorse, this isn’t always the best option.

Hole 26 Par 3

Cumberwell Blue Course Hole 26

Stroke Index: Ladies 9, Men 9

What can you say about the 26th hole?

One of the finest risk and reward holes you will ever find. If the pin is tucked anywhere near the left side you will need to hit close to the lake for a good chance of a birdie or even a par.

Bale out right and you could have a monster putt. From the back tees this hole is formidable where anything less than perfect will find a watery grave.

Hole 27 Par 5

Cumberwell Blue Course Hole 27

Stroke Index: Ladies 11, Men 11

On paper this last hole should be quite an easy short par five.

However, uphill into the wind and a tight drive between four bunkers means that this is far from a pushover.

The second shot again played uphill is to a huge, well protected green.

Orange Course Individual Hole Analysis

The Orange Course at Cumberwell Park is a Links style Downland course with stunning views

Hole 28 Par 4

Cumberwell Orange Course Hole 28

Stroke Index: Ladies 16, Men 15

The 28th hole introduces you to the Orange course, which is quite different in character and design to the other courses at Cumberwell.

There is much room on the fairway but tee shot placement is still of the utmost importance.

On this drivable par four you will need to be aware of the many severe slopes on and around the green if you are to get a birdie.

For example, there is a nasty little downhill slope at the start of this green.

Hole 29 Par 3

Cumberwell Orange Course Hole 29

Stroke Index: Ladies 12, Men 11

The 29th is an early par three that is formidable from the back tee.

From the regular tees it is quite possible to use the right hand slopes to feed your shot in close to the pin.

The green has some acute undulations in, that can lead to some interesting putting.

Hole 30 Par 4

Cumberwell Orange Course Hole 30

Stroke Index: Ladies 8, Men 7

The 30th hole is a medium length par four where the strategy is dictated by the green and the pin location.

Generally it is best to drive up the right side on this hole to open up as much of the green as possible.

However, if the pin is cut on the right side of the green you will probably be better advised to favour the left.

The key though is to hit that fairway and try not to leave yourself a downhill putt, as they can be treacherous.

Hole 31 Par 3

Cumberwell Orange Course Hole 31

Stroke Index: Ladies 18, Men 17

This is a great little par three with a punch-bowl green.

Beware of the wind which can whistle in from the right side.

Sometimes the best play is to try and hit a soft fade into this narrow and very long green.

Hole 32 Par 4

Cumberwell Orange Course Hole 32

Stroke Index: Ladies 10, Men 9

Decide which side of the fairway bunkers you are going on this medium length par four.

The fairway is nearing 100 yards in width so there is little excuse for missing it but sometimes a safe shot to the right side will leave a very awkward second to a testing little green.

Also, the better player needs to be aware that the fairway narrows dramatically when you get within pitching distance of the green.

Hole 33 Par 4

Cumberwell Orange Course Hole 33

Stroke Index: Ladies 4, Men 3

You are now at the highest point on the estate so take time to appreciate the spectacular views over the next couple of holes.

This particular hole is a long par four played into the prevailing wind. It also is a great design, in that it shares the fairway with the 34th hole, so it is possible to go as far right as you wish and still be on the fairway.

However, this will give you a very long and totally blind second to a classic skyline green.

Hole 34 Par 5

Cumberwell Orange Course Hole 34

Stroke Index: Ladies 6, Men 5

The 34th hole is another great driving hole.

The ideal is just to the right, or even over the right hand fairway bunker in the distance.

However, on this line you have to be accurate.

A safe bailout drive to the right will set up a relatively easy par but be aware of that fiendish bunker surrounded by long rough that is positioned 50 yards from the green.

Hole 35 Par 5

Cumberwell Orange Course Hole 35

Stroke Index: Ladies 2, Men 1

An awesome hole that is approaching 600 yards from the back markers and is played directly into the prevailing wind.

The key to achieveing a birdie is to favour the right side on your second shot.

This will allow you the best approach into the green.

The green could only be described as eccentric, especially on the back left side.

Hole 36 Par 3

Cumberwell Orange Course Hole 36

Stroke Index: Ladies 14, Men 13

A fitting finale!

The walled backdrop can be used to try and rebound your ball back off from.

However, the greatest hazard is actually the little hidden swale short and right off the green.

This will swallow up any shot that is weakly hit leaving a testing little chip.
