Individual Hole Analysis

Hole 1 Par 4

Bassett Down Hole 1

WHITE 387 YARDS | YELLOW 368 YARDS | RED 336 YARDS

After a short, picturesque walk along an undulating tarmac path past a small lake and the short game practice area you will find yourself at the 1st tee.

A good length par 4 with a sharp dog leg right at around 230 yards.

The fairway slopes gently up from the tee to this point with the dog leg protected from a number of ponds. From the dog leg the fairway splits in two to allow for the shorter hitters to find some short grass with their second shot.

A gently sloping green from back to front has 2 bunkers protecting it along with banks to the right and the rear.

Hole 2 Par 3

Bassett Down Hole 2

WHITE 134 YARDS | YELLOW 120 YARDS | RED 107 YARDS

A relatively short par 3 surrounded by mature trees, these provide a lot of protection from all but the most severe winds. With elevated tees you have an excellent view of the infinity green and countryside behind.

Don’t be deceived by the shortness of the hole, the green is protected by 3 bunkers and an 18 inch step running across it.

Hole 3 Par 4

Bassett Down Hole 3

WHITE 312 YARDS | YELLOW 307 YARDS | RED 268 YARDS

One of the best holes on the course, the 3rd is a short but tricky par 4 dog legging slightly to the left.

With the fairway sloping from right to left, a large lake running along the left side and out of bounds to the right your tee shot needs to be well placed.

From 120 yards things heat up with the fairway narrowing severely and undulations protecting a long narrow 45 degree angled green.

Any long hitters hoping to cut the corner will find a deep gully to the side of the green.

Hole 4 Par 4

Bassett Down Hole 4

WHITE 365 YARDS | YELLOW 346 YARDS | RED 307 YARDS

With a generous flat fairway to aim at you could be mistaken for thinking this will be an easy par 4.

Your tee shot needs to be well placed between 3 large bunkers and not run into the rough between this split fairway hole. After the end of the first section of fairway the ground drops away all the way to the well protected green.

With a narrow green running across the hole and 3 well placed bunkers you will want to be on this plateau rather than the down-slope between the two fairways.

Hole 5 Par 4

Bassett Down Hole 5

WHITE 347 YARDS | YELLOW 340 YARDS | RED 330 YARDS

A medium length par four, which plays with a gentle left to right dogleg.

The fairway is wide with a bunker on the right.

The green itself is a generous size and slopes up from front to back. The longer hitter will be looking to go into the green with a short iron depending on the wind.

But most players will have to settle for a tee shot just left of centre. The second shot is played to a good sized green bunkered either side.

Hole 6 Par 4

Bassett Down Hole 6

WHITE 273 YARDS | YELLOW 267 YARDS | RED 182 YARDS

A tricky par four with thought required from the tee as it has a slight right to left dogleg.

There is a pond running across the width of the hole at 225 yards driving distance with trees bordering and narrowing the hole dramatically. The green is 48 yards long and kidney shaped.

The green itself banks sharply to the left, right and at the back.

A short par 4 that demands an accurate tee shot. Any shot a little right or left will leave the player with the option of either laying up short of the pond that guards the green or gambling with a shot over the trees to a two tier green.

A good birdie chance or a card wrecker.

Hole 7 Par 4

Bassett Down Hole 7

WHITE 355 YARDS | YELLOW 347 YARDS | RED 267 YARDS

This hole is a gentle downhill par four with a small left to right dogleg. There is a ditch running down the left hand side of the hole that starts 90 yards from the tee, and works its way away from the fairway.

The fairway slopes from right to left with a large tree in the right hand semi rough that is 75 yards from the green.

The green itself is protected by a bunker set into the front left hand portion of the green and rises quickly from the front to the middle of the green, with the back portion sitting as a plateau.

A tee shot just left of centre will leave you the best approach to a small green bunker on the left hand side. Any tee shot pushed right will be blocked out by a large mature tree some 75 yards from the green.

Hole 8 Par 4

Bassett Down Hole 8

WHITE 406 YARDS | YELLOW 400 YARDS | RED 397 YARDS

The longest par 4 on the course.

The tee shot on this hole is slightly blind, due to a steep rise 50 yards from the tee. At 257 yards where the hole turns slightly to the left, there is a ditch which runs to the edge of each side of the fairway.

The fairway slopes from right to left, and is protected at 250 yards by a large oak on the left hand side.

The green slopes strongly from left to right, and is guarded by bunkers on either side. A very tricky green to get on, and then just as hard to putt on. Even the shortest putt on this green requires your full attention.

This hole usually played into the prevailing wind demands two well struck shots to find the green. Most players however will require 3 shots and the approach shot is played to green which slopes heavily left to right.

Hole 9 Par 5

Bassett Down Hole 9

WHITE 492 YARDS | YELLOW 483 YARDS | RED 402 YARDS

The finishing hole at Basset Down has a large hill sitting in the middle of the fairway at driving distance.

Rising sharply from the tee, and then falling sharply the other side, it provides a real tester to end the round. There are bunkers left and right to be negotiated from the tee.

It requires a drive of over 235 yards to reach the top of the hill where there is a downhill approach with a lovely view of the clubhouse waiting.

The green has bunkers left and right to protect it, and has some very subtle borrows to conquer. The last tee shot of the round needs to avoid two fairway bunkers over either side of the fairway.

The longer hitter will be hoping to make the brow of the hill to give a clear view of a downhill second shot played towards the backdrop of the clubhouse.

However, most players will have to settle for a position on the upslope leaving a slightly blind second shot which should favour the left hand side of the fairway.

Any pitch or chip shot to this green is always tricky, with the green sitting like an up turned saucer.  A strong finishing hole, anyone recording a 4 will be very pleased with themselves.
